Microplastics and Heart Health: What It Means for Your Water

A new study published in the European Heart Journal has found that people who recently had a heart attack are more likely to have detectable microplastics and nanoplastics in their blood than people living with stable heart disease or people with structurally normal coronary arteries. The research team, involving Sapienza University of Rome, the University of Verona and the University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli", was careful to note this is an association, not proof that plastic particles cause heart attacks — but it's a finding worth understanding.

What the Study Looked At

Researchers analysed blood samples from 61 patients treated at Italian hospitals, drawn from coronary arteries and from elsewhere in the body, and compared three groups: people who had just had a serious heart attack, people living with chronic ischaemic heart disease, and people with structurally normal coronary arteries. Micro or nanoplastics were detected in 84% of the heart attack group, compared with 40% of the chronic heart disease group and 32% of the group with normal arteries. Polyethylene — a plastic used widely in packaging and single-use containers — was the type most often found.

Smoking, Air Pollution and Where the Plastic Comes From

The study also looked at lifestyle and environmental exposure over the two years before testing. Smokers were around six times more likely than non-smokers to have detectable plastic particles in blood drawn from the vessels supplying the heart, and people with higher long-term exposure to fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) showed a similar pattern. Patients who both smoked and had higher pollution exposure had plastic particles detected in every case, compared with roughly one in eight among patients with neither exposure. Professor Emanuele Barbato, one of the study's senior researchers, was direct about the limits of what this shows: "These findings do not prove that microplastics cause heart attacks, but they reveal a strong association between environmental exposures, microplastics in the blood and cardiovascular disease."

  • Store water in glass or stainless steel rather than leaving it in a plastic bottle for extended periods, especially in a hot car or under direct sun.
  • Avoid heating food or drinks in plastic containers, since heat can speed up the release of plastic particles into food and liquid.
